Bernies Colorado Journeys - walks around Old Colorado City with the Pikes Peak Library District

Zebulon Pike traveled the south-central part of today’s Colorado in November of 1806 and is credited for 'discovering' the mountain that would be later named after him, Pikes Peak. Colorado City (now Old Colorado City), initially and briefly known as El Dorado for the mines found during the Colorado gold rush was founded by The Colorado City Town Company that laid claim to two square miles of land that would become Colorado City on May 22, 1859. It was the first capital of the Territory of Colorado, although very short lived, and was the center of early settlement in the Pikes Peak region. It was in Kansas Territory at the time, but became the capitol of Colorado Territory in 1861. Until 1913, Colorado City remained independent, fueled by gold, entertainment and industry. However, prohibition hit this town of saloons hard. In 1917, with no economic recovery in sight, the residents voted to become part of Colorado Springs. Colorado City did have better luck serving as the county seat of El Paso County and held that position until 1873 when it was moved to Colorado Springs.
