The California State Department of Parks & Recreation includes 280 different park units, including reserves, beaches, trails, historic sites and vehicular recreation areas - for a combined area of over 1.5 million acres. California State Parks contains the largest and most diverse natural and cultural heritage holdings of any state agency in the nation. I kept reading news reports that if you are into wild flowers the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is the place to be in late winter, especially if it has rained. So, I thought I’d check it out. This Park was established in 1933 and spans three CA counties: San Diego, Riverside, and Imperial. It’s the largest state park in the lower 48 states, with more than 1,000 square miles and over 650,000 acres. The park is registered as a National Natural Landmark, the same as Colorado’s beloved Garden of the Gods.
