Dwight Henson is a candidate for Denver Mayor, and this is not his first run at the job. Here is his platform, including discussion of the homeless issue, because Mr. Henson has been homeless in this city, and knows a few things about it.
A former livestock auction caller, Mr. Henson is not currently homeless, as he decided to find a method to get himself off the street. But he tells of the people he knew while he was homeless, and his belief that other major cities are giving their homeless people a one-way bus ticket to .... Denver?
People running from the law or just from child support payments have sometimes chosen that life, Henson said, adding comparisons with other major cities that provide free homes but send you packing if you reject the offer.
Mr. Henson's platform also includes a plan to introduce gambling in Denver to supplement the existing tourism and convention industry. He is in favor of rolling back residential property taxes too, as an economic stimulus.
Also in this hour, Hostess Paula Rhoads provides video footage from the Senate Transportation Committee hearing on Senate Bill 3 last Tuesday. Bill sponsor Senator Nancy Spence brings Chris Chappell and Jim Tatten, both Craig Hospital graduates, to explain the need for Craig Hospital license plates to raise funds to help people with disabilities become more independent, such as a ramp at home for wheelchair access.
Be watching for Senator Spence's Senate Bill 40 promoting education for high school and middle school coaches to recognize the symptoms of a brain injury, so they can pull injured athletes from play to prevent the SECOND IMPACT SYNDROME that sometimes kills and disables children.
Also, a brief clip from PHAMALY's production of The Diviners, which ends its Aurora Fox run January 30. But there's still time to get tickets for their encore performances in late February for the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities.
