IS YOUR CONTENT HD OR SD?

All Content must now be submitted in its ORIGINAL RECORDING. Only Recorded, Edited and Exported HD content should be submitted as HD content. If your content is SD, it should remain SD.

These are the SD SETTINGS you should use:

  • Compression: H.264

  • Quality: 100%

  • Limit Data Rate to 10 Mbps (do not submit kbps)

  • Sound: MPEG4 AAC - 48kHz

  • 29.97 Frame Rate

  • 720X420 (DV-NTSC)

  • FILE NAME: Do not start with a number. Do not use spaces or special characters in your file name (except for periods and underscores)

Introduction

This tutorial provides a step by step guide on how to submit your SD content to DOM servers for ingestion into our broadcast system. This tutorial specifically demonstrates the steps for SD files, although these settings are required of all media submitted for broadcast. Make sure that you follow the correct steps when ingesting HD content. We strongly recommend reading the entire tutorial before you begin. If you need assistance, please ask a station intern.

The key steps are      1) Preparing your video file for system ingestion,

                                  2) Exporting/transferring your video file to the ingest folder and

                                  3) Creating your show on the Denver Open Media website.

To successfully complete this tutorial you will need:

  • A current Basic (or higher) Membership at Denver Open Media

  • Be logged in to a computer in either the Learning Lab or Edit Lab;

  • See the "ingest" icon on the desktop or in Finder

  • See the "MPEG Streamclip" icon on the dock or in Finder

  • SD content to submit to the station!

If you have difficulty meeting any of the above requirements, please see one of the interns or staff at the DOM Help Desk.

1) Preparing your video for ingestion

  • Double click on MPEG Streamclip

  • Mount DVD or external drive at Workstation.

    • Our lab computers no longer have disc drives. Technology is moving away from DVDs! Please reserve a Blu-Ray drive from the Editing section of the reservations page.

    • Connect the disc or external drive into the USB port on the iMac. You should then see the DVD or other media icon appear on your desktop.  If the DVD Player application or QuickTime automatically launches, you can preview your DVD, stop or Quit.

  • Transfer Video to MPEG Streamclip - Open your media file in MPEG Streamclip.

    • Click on File → Open DVD.

OR

  • Simply click and drag your DVD or other media icon from the desktop to the center of MPEG Streamclip as seen below.

  • Fix Timecode Breaks - If you received the warning "the stream may contain Timecode breaks", click on Fix Now and then Proceed.

  • If you have not been prompted to fix timecode breaks but would like to run this process anyway, you can select from the MPEG Streamclip menu Edit->Fix Timecode Breaks. Select Proceed. This will take a few minutes to complete.

  • Trim and Quality Check

    • You can now play the video by either touching the space bar or “L” key. You can also drag the playhead using the mouse. For Fine Tuning: go frame by frame using the right and left arrow keys on the keyboard.

    • Trim the beginning and end of the program

      • Move the playhead to the location where the program should start, then press the “I” key for IN. Then move the playhead to where the program should end and press the “O” key for OUT.

        Trim.png

  • Once, you've completed the process of setting your IN and OUT Points, go to Edit -> Trim in the Menu bar to Trim your video.

*Make sure that you have cut out (trimmed) all black, bars, or anything else that is not part of your actual show - we only want your actual video, nothing else.*

2) Export Video to Ingest Folder

  • Export and Quality Check - Once you have finished trimming your video, you are ready to export.

    • From the MPEG Streamclip menu choose File->Export to Quicktime.

  • Frame Size

    • Must be 720x480 (DV-NTSC) The radio button indicates your video's CURRENT dimensions and format. If your video is 1440x1080, 1280x720 or 1920x1080, please use Submitting HD Content to ingest your content instead.

    • CHANGE 640x480 to 720x480 (DV-NTSC). Frame Size SD.png

  • Make Movie

    • Click "Make Movie" button at the bottom right-hand corner of the dialog box.

    • Name your file. DO NOT START WITH A NUMBER AND DO NOT USE SPECIAL CHARACTERS IN YOUR FILE NAME! (periods and underscores are an exception to this).

  • Save to the desktop.

  • Click on Save.

    • A small window with a progress indicator will pop up.

  • Quality Control - As your video is encoding, check the Exporter Preview to make sure your video looks good. It should not look stretched or squashed. You can also export your video to the DESKTOP first. When it is finished, double-click your video file icon on the desktop to open in Quicktime and check that it plays, is trimmed, and looks and sounds correct.

ExportPreview.png

  • Once your Video is fully Exported to the Ingest Drive - Take a break.

    • The system will take 10-15 minutes to check your video. If your video has been exported with the correct settings, it will show up in the Dropdown list in Submit a Show page on the Denver Open Media website.

  • Troubleshooting Problems

    • If your video doesn’t disappear from Ingest -  your video does not have a unique file name, or is not the right file extension. Rename your video and try again.

    • If your video never appears in the Dropdown list, it likely has the wrong settings. Most typically, the frame rate or frame size is incompatible with our system. Check your settings and try again.

3) Submitting Your Video/Show

  • Login to your DOM website Dashboard.

Submit Show.png

Click "Submit New Show" on the left side of the page and fill out the form. Please note the following:

  • Make sure you choose the correct rating! (TV-MA will only air from 10pm-6am)
